Tension in P’Harcourt as Police engage gunmen in shootout

There was tension around the GRA axis of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, as policemen engaged gunmen suspected to be armed robbers in a gun duel at about 7.20pm on Wednesday.
The deafening sound of gunshots had forced motorists to desert the GRA and its environs, even as an eyewitness told our correspondent that traders and passersby took to their heels.
Security operatives were still trailing the hoodlums as at the time of filing this report while the entire area (GRA) had been taken over by policemen in search of the criminals.
While unconfirmed report had it that the suspected armed robbers had attacked a new generation bank located in the area, there were also speculations that the armed robbers snatched a huge amount of money from a man.
“I don’t actually know where the armed robbers operated, but I noticed that some people were running helter-skelter as the armed robbers shot into the air to scare people in order to escape.
“I also learnt that some policemen were moving in a hurry, probably to catch the criminals,” the eyewitness said.
When reached, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Mohammad, said though he had yet to get the full details of what happened, the police were currently on the trial of a group of criminals.

“The police are on the trail of some hoodlums. I am not sure now if it is a case of bank robbery or whether it is a house or vehicle that was attacked. I will give you the details later when I am fully briefed,” Mohammad said.
